What they handle badly is the part that is specific to you, and that specific part is usually the reason the business works.

Development is how that gap gets closed. Sometimes it means a complete application; often it means a smaller piece of software that sits between systems you already own, removing manual work and giving you information that previously required a reconciliation exercise.
